On October 3, 2009, the City of Columbia and the TreeKeepers partnered with the Hinkson Creek Watershed Restoration Project to plant trees to help reduce stormwater runoff. The site is located at Eastport Park, which is at the intersection of Port Way and Murfreesboro Dr. in the Eastport Subdivision. The site is situated next to the Grindstone Creek, which is an impaired tributary to Hinkson Creek. 20 trees each of Northern Redbud, Persimmon, Pin Oak, and Swamp White Oak were planted. 19 Kentucky Coffee trees were planted as well.
According to the American Forests,
"trees reduce stormwater flow by intercepting rainwater on leaves, branches, and trunks. Some of the intercepted water evaporates back into the atmosphere, and some soaks into the ground reducing the total amount of runoff that must be managed in urban areas. Trees also slow storm flow, reducing the volume of water that a containment facility, such as a sediment basin or cistern, must store."
